Taiwan and Guatemala Seek to Expand Trade, Investment and Strategic Cooperation
Guatemala and Taiwan seek to expand trade, investment and cooperation in technology, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
Guatemala and Taiwan are seeking to strengthen bilateral cooperation, expand trade and attract investment across strategic sectors, including technology, healthcare, education, infrastructure and electric mobility. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung began an official visit to Guatemala as both countries marked 92 years of diplomatic relations.
Guatemala and Taiwan launch a new political consultation mechanism
Lin was received on Thursday by Guatemala's Foreign Minister, Carlos Ramiro Martínez, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex). The two officials held a bilateral meeting and led the first session of the Political Consultation Mechanism at the foreign minister level, established following a memorandum of understanding signed by both governments.
The discussions addressed the international political landscape and key priorities on the bilateral agenda, including trade, strategic investment, semiconductors, cybersecurity, healthcare and infrastructure.
Martínez said the visit aims to consolidate ongoing projects while creating opportunities for new initiatives. He also highlighted Taiwan's longstanding cooperation with Guatemala in areas such as healthcare, education, agriculture, rural development and infrastructure.
The Guatemalan foreign minister noted that the visit provides an opportunity to expand engagement beyond government institutions. Lin's delegation includes business representatives, academics, universities, research centers and public officials seeking to establish connections with Guatemala's public and private sectors.
According to information shared during the meeting, Taiwan participated in more than 70 projects in Guatemala over the past three years, with support from public and private sector stakeholders.

Taiwan delegation targets technology, healthcare and green energy
Lin said the business representatives accompanying him work across six broad areas: green energy and intelligent transportation; artificial intelligence, digital and space technologies; biotechnology; healthcare and medicine; tourism; and finance and trade.
The delegation intends to learn more about the needs of the Guatemalan market and the conditions for developing investment projects. Lin described the visit as an opportunity to lay the groundwork for future agreements, saying,
“We are planting the seeds of new opportunities.”
The agenda includes meetings with Guatemalan business representatives and activities involving technology companies. One of the planned engagements is related to Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's state-owned telecommunications company.
The participation of academics and specialists is also expected to create opportunities for collaboration in medical education, specialized hospitals, innovation, scientific research, startup incubation and knowledge transfer.
Healthcare and airport security feature on the agenda
As part of the visit, Lin will tour the site designated for the construction of the Specialized Cancer Hospital, one of the bilateral cooperation projects. He said the visit would allow him to review progress on initiatives being developed alongside Guatemalan institutions.
The delegation will also participate in activities related to the Emergency Operations and Incident Control Monitoring Center at La Aurora International Airport.
These visits form part of the broader effort to follow up on existing commitments and identify areas where cooperation can continue to develop.

Visit builds on Guatemala's 2025 engagement with Taiwan
The official visit comes after Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo traveled to Taiwan in 2025. Both foreign ministers emphasized the importance of continuing the commitments that followed that visit.
Martínez described the relationship between the two countries as one built over more than nine decades on cordiality, fraternity and collaboration.
By bringing together business leaders, academics and government officials, Lin's delegation aims to broaden contacts between the two countries and explore potential projects across strategic sectors.
The discussions on trade, investment, technology, healthcare and infrastructure reflect the shared objective of maintaining existing cooperation while creating opportunities for future initiatives between Guatemala and Taiwan.
