Taiwan’s Naval Squadron Visit Reinforces Guatemala Diplomatic and Military Relations

Taiwan and Guatemala reinforced their diplomatic and military cooperation following the arrival of Taiwan’s Naval Friendship Squadron, a visit aimed at deepening strategic relations between both countries, according to official information from the Presidency.
Cultural showcase highlights diplomatic visit
As part of its official agenda, the delegation had a public performance at Plaza de la Constitución, featuring 170 members of its artistic ensemble. The event included demonstrations by the Honor Guard, musical presentations by a marching band, and martial arts exhibitions.
Taiwan’s ambassador to Guatemala, Vivía Chang, noted that the squadron was established in 1953 and last visited the country in 2018. She also highlighted that three Guatemalan cadets are currently part of the delegation and are expected to complete their training in Taiwan this year.

Educational and military cooperation expands
Official figures indicate that more than 600 Guatemalan students are currently studying in Taiwan. In parallel, over 100 scholarships have been granted this year to members of the Guatemalan Army, reflecting ongoing collaboration in education and military training.
The Minister of National Defense, Henry Saenz, emphasized that these exchanges help strengthen ties between the armed forces of both nations. He stated that shared values such as democracy, respect for human rights, and adherence to legal frameworks are key to consolidating bilateral cooperation in security matters.
High-level recognition and diplomatic gestures
President Bernardo Arévalo led the official ceremony, during which he received a commemorative plaque acknowledging the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Guatemala and Taiwan.
Additionally, it was reported that on May 2, Taiwan awarded the Naval Merit Medal in various ranks to Guatemalan military leaders. The recognition highlights joint efforts and collaboration in operations and security-related initiatives.

The visit of the Naval Friendship Squadron underscores the continuity of diplomatic, educational, and military ties between both nations. Through cultural exchange, training programs, and institutional cooperation, Taiwan and Guatemala continue to strengthen a relationship grounded in shared principles and strategic collaboration.
