San Jorge International Logistics Center Opens First Stage of Guatemala’s Interoceanic Corridor
San Jorge International Logistics Center marks the first stage of Guatemala’s Interoceanic Corridor, connecting 372 kilometers from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast.
The Corredor Interoceánico de Guatemala has reached a new stage with the opening of the first phase of the San Jorge International Logistics Center, following more than two decades of work to consolidate the territory needed for the project.
More than 3,500 families are now part of the initiative, contributing to the integration of a continuous 372-kilometer territorial corridor stretching from Guatemala’s Atlantic coast to its Pacific coast. This territory will serve as the foundation for the progressive development of the infrastructure planned for the Interoceanic Corridor.
“For years, many people thought this project could not become a reality. The communities participated, and there is now real territory on which to build the logistics route of the future,” said Guillermo Catalán, promoter of the Guatemala Interoceanic Corridor.
Studies and Planning Behind the Project
The territorial consolidation process has been accompanied by a series of studies and preliminary planning efforts intended to support the development of the Corridor.
These include legal, social, technical and financial feasibility studies, market studies, preliminary infrastructure designs, railway layouts, service roads, pipeline systems, bathymetric studies and a strategic environmental assessment.
“The corridor connects oceans, connects ports and, above all, connects opportunities,” said Dr. José Ramiro Bolaños, CEO of Improgress.
San Jorge Port City as the First Concrete Step
The San Jorge Port City represents the first concrete step in this broader vision. The project covers 21 square kilometers and includes approximately five kilometers of coastline along the Caribbean.
“Guatemala has a privileged geographic position that we need to transform into infrastructure and logistics capacity to compete in an increasingly dynamic global economy,” said Rolando Melgar, executive director and CEO of the Interoceanic Consortium of Guatemala.
The complex will be developed in stages and is intended to attract operators, developers and investors that can contribute to its different components.
Turning Territory Into Investment and Opportunities
For the Interoceanic Consortium of Guatemala, the San Jorge International Logistics Center represents an initial step toward translating the country’s territory into new economic opportunities.
“The San Jorge International Logistics Center represents the first step for Guatemala to begin transforming its territory into investment, employment and new opportunities for the region,” said Herbert Fernández Townson, vice president of the Interoceanic Consortium of Guatemala.
With the first stage now opening, the San Jorge International Logistics Center creates a space for those interested in becoming part of the construction of what the project describes as “The Route of the Future.”
