Mastercard Says AI and Digital Payments Are Reshaping Guatemala's SMEs

Mastercard says digital transformation has become a fundamental driver of growth and competitiveness for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Guatemala. According to company executives, adopting digital tools, payment solutions, and artificial intelligence is no longer optional for businesses seeking to remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy.

Digitalization has become the foundation for business growth

During an interview, Ximena Baeza, Vice President of SME Commercialization for Latin America at Mastercard, emphasized that digital transformation now plays a central role in business development.

"Digitalization is no longer just a growth factor—it is the foundation of growth," Baeza said.

She explained that more than 80% of SMEs in Guatemala believe digital payment solutions improve customer experience while supporting business growth.

According to Baeza, digital technologies also enable companies to automate routine tasks, reduce operational errors, and leverage data to make faster and more informed business decisions.

Artificial intelligence is becoming accessible to SMEs

Baeza also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence in small business operations, noting that the technology is no longer reserved for large corporations.

"Artificial intelligence is no longer exclusive to large companies," she said.

Instead, SMEs can use AI to automate business processes, strengthen customer service, and improve overall business management.

Businesses without digital payments risk losing customers

Marvin Rodríguez, Mastercard Country Manager for Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, warned that companies relying exclusively on traditional business models face increasing challenges as customer expectations continue to evolve.

According to Rodríguez, 64% of SMEs that do not accept digital payments lose customers at least once a week, underscoring the competitive importance of offering modern payment options.

Flexibility and technology are shaping future competitiveness

Rodríguez stressed that adaptability has become one of the most valuable qualities for businesses navigating today's marketplace.

"Flexibility is the new superpower," he said.

He added that companies embracing technology, automating their operations, and using data to guide decision-making are not only better positioned to withstand market changes but are also more likely to become leaders in their industries.

"The change is already here, and now is the time to lead," Rodríguez concluded.
