Guatemala Opens Applications for 2026 English Scholarships at IGA

IGA and the Municipality of Guatemala have launched a new scholarship program that will provide free English courses for Guatemalans between 18 and 45 years old during the second half of 2026.

The initiative, developed in partnership with the Instituto Guatemalteco Americano (IGA), will run from June through December 2026 and will be held in person at the institution’s headquarters in Zone 4 of Guatemala City. Participants will be able to choose between morning and afternoon schedules.

What the Scholarship Covers

According to the organizers, the scholarship program includes full coverage of enrollment fees and monthly tuition payments for six months. These payments will be made directly to the IGA.

Selected students will also receive books and educational materials at no additional cost, as well as access to extracurricular workshops designed to complement the learning experience.

Requirements to Apply for the Scholarship

Applicants interested in joining the program must meet several requirements established by the Municipality of Guatemala and the IGA.

Candidates must:

  • Be between 18 and 45 years old
  • Have completed high school education
  • Reside within Guatemala City municipality
  • Have availability to attend classes during the six-month program
  • Be able to travel daily to the IGA headquarters in Zone 4
  • Be available to participate in complementary extracurricular activities outside regular class hours

The organizers indicated that having a basic level of English is desirable, although beginner-level applicants will also be accepted.

How to Apply for the IGA Scholarships

The first step in the application process is completing the online registration form with personal information.

After submitting the form, applicants must prepare the required documentation, including:

  • A photocopy of their DPI
  • A recent utility bill, such as water, electricity, or telephone service
  • Proof of the highest level of education completed
  • Preferably, a reference letter from an institution or organization where the applicant has participated, either voluntarily or professionally

The documents must be delivered in person at the Anexo IGA building, located at 9a Avenida 0-31, Zone 4, during one of the following dates and time slots:

Organizers emphasized that these will be the only dates available for document submission. Applicants must also bring their original DPI to enter the institution.

Interviews and Evaluation Process

On the same day that applicants submit their paperwork, they will participate in an informational session and an interview. Because of this, organizers recommend selecting the most convenient date and schedule to ensure enough time for the full process.

Applicants who meet all requirements and successfully complete the oral and written evaluations will be admitted into the program.

The evaluations will be conducted virtually, and participants are advised to regularly check both their inbox and spam folders for updates sent via email.
