Family Business Summit Guatemala: Preparing Companies for Generational Succession
Family Business Summit arrives in Guatemala to address succession, corporate governance and wealth planning for family-owned businesses.
In Guatemala, many businesses are built around family structures, but ensuring their continuity across generations can present significant challenges. The Family Business Summit will arrive in the country for the first time to create a space for discussion around succession, corporate governance, family wealth, and the transition from a family business to a business-owning family.
The event will take place on September 29 at the Hotel Real InterContinental Guatemala, starting at 8:00 a.m. It will bring together family business owners, board members, managers, and members of different generations within the same company.
According to information presented by the Family Business Summit, fewer than 20% of family businesses in Latin America reach a second generation, while less than 5% make it to a third.
Against this backdrop, the meeting aims to address some of the decisions and conversations that can influence the continuity of a family-owned company.
Succession as a key challenge for family businesses
One of the central topics of the summit will be succession, a process that goes beyond determining who will take over the leadership of a company.
According to Diego Lladó, CEO of ALTAG – Alta Gerencia and Regional Ambassador of the Family Business Summit, succession also involves defining how family members can join the company, the conditions for their participation, how decisions are made, when a member can leave, and what role future generations will have.
“Succession is not limited to defining who will occupy the leadership. It also involves establishing who can join the company, under what conditions, how decisions are made, when a member can retire, and what role the following generations will have.”
These types of agreements can be formalized through a family protocol and succession plan, tools intended to help distinguish family relationships from business decisions while establishing criteria for the incorporation and participation of family members.
The summit will address these issues alongside other topics connected to corporate governance, family wealth, innovation, and generational transition.
International speakers will address family business topics
The program will feature specialists from different countries, as well as conversations with representatives of companies and organizations involved in Guatemala's business ecosystem.
Among the international speakers is María Fonseca Paredes, director of the Institute of Business Families at Tecnológico de Monterrey for Latin America. Her participation will focus on topics related to governance and succession.
Rodrigo Lozano, from Colombia, will address issues related to family wealth and family wealth planning.
From Argentina, Martín Quirós, an international consultant, will discuss the transition from a family business to a business-owning family, as well as the conversations families need to have to prepare future generations.

An agenda focused on family business leaders
The event's agenda includes a presentation by Rodrigo Lozano, participation from representatives of Banco Industrial, a conversation with Grupo CFE, a conference by María Fonseca, a session with PwC, and a closing presentation by Martín Quirós.
The program is designed to address different aspects of family businesses, from succession and governance to wealth and the preparation of future generations.

Participants who purchase a VIP ticket will have access to an additional experience with the international speakers.
The package includes a lunch with the speakers, an autographed book from one of the conference participants, and the opportunity to join a group of up to 25 business owners for a conversation about topics related to their companies.
