Avianca Expands U.S. Network With New Guatemala–San Francisco Route
Avianca launches direct seasonal flights between Guatemala City and San Francisco starting June 2026.
Avianca has announced a new direct connection between Guatemala City and San Francisco, California, a move designed to strengthen tourism, business travel, and ties with the Guatemalan community living on the U.S. West Coast.
Avianca Introduces a New Guatemala–San Francisco Connection
The Colombian airline revealed that the new route will initially operate as a seasonal service from June 1 to August 31, 2026, offering four weekly frequencies and more than 1,440 seats per week.
According to the company, the long-term goal is to transform the route into a year-round operation if passenger demand meets expectations.
During the announcement, representatives from Avianca, the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Inguat), and the Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) emphasized that the new connection could contribute to increasing visitor arrivals, facilitating business opportunities, and enhancing Guatemala's position in international markets.

California Emerges as a Strategic Market for Guatemala
Avianca explained that the decision to launch the route stems from an opportunity identified within one of Guatemala's most important international markets: the United States.
Alex Ruiz, representing the airline, noted that Guatemala maintains a steady flow of travelers to and from the U.S., while San Francisco had remained without a direct air connection until now.
The route will operate during the peak tourism season, allowing the airline to assess market performance before considering its expansion throughout the year.
Flights will be operated using Airbus A320 aircraft with seating capacity for 180 passengers.
Departures from Guatemala City are scheduled for 1:20 a.m., arriving in San Francisco at 6:25 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Return flights will depart California at 7:45 a.m., landing in Guatemala at 2:15 p.m.
Tourism, Business Travel, and the Guatemalan Diaspora
For Harris Whitbeck, director of Inguat, San Francisco represents much more than an additional destination within Guatemala's air network.
He highlighted the importance of the Guatemalan diaspora residing in California, including second- and third-generation descendants who may choose to visit Guatemala for the first time.
Whitbeck also pointed out that travelers from the San Francisco region align closely with the type of tourism Guatemala seeks to promote internationally.
"It is a tourist profile interested in what Guatemala offers in terms of authenticity, gastronomy, art, culture, nature, and adventure," Whitbeck said.
Among the destinations that could benefit most from the new route, he mentioned Antigua Guatemala, Lake Atitlán, Tikal, and Guatemala City, particularly due to the capital's growing gastronomic and cultural offerings.
The Inguat director further stated:
"San Francisco is an extremely important and prestigious market. Having this connection helps strengthen the narrative that Guatemala is becoming a world-class destination."
FIFA World Cup 2026 Influences Network Expansion
Avianca indicated that the route also forms part of its strategy to strengthen connectivity with the United States during a year marked by the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place across several U.S. cities.
Reyna Mejía, Avianca's Sales Director for Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, stated:
"This new seasonal route between Guatemala and San Francisco will allow us to bring more travelers closer to the passion of football while continuing to strengthen our offering in Guatemala."

A Gateway to the U.S. Technology Hub
From Avianca's perspective, the route extends beyond tourism opportunities.
Mejía emphasized that San Francisco is globally recognized as one of the leading centers for innovation, technology, and investment, creating opportunities for greater business and corporate exchange between both regions.
"San Francisco is the global center of industry and technology. Providing this connectivity alternative to Guatemala opens important opportunities for business, industrial, and technological development," she said.
The airline also highlighted the relevance of travelers visiting friends and relatives (VFR), a segment that remains significant for routes connecting Guatemala with the United States.
Increased Capacity and Enhanced Connectivity
The new service will contribute more than 1,440 weekly seats to the Guatemalan market. Avianca currently operates 10 routes and destinations from Guatemala, including two seasonal routes to U.S. cities: Chicago and now San Francisco.
According to company figures, Avianca accounts for approximately one-third of all air traffic entering and leaving Guatemala. During 2025, the airline transported more than 1.3 million passengers through over 10,000 flights connected to the country.
The company also reported maintaining approximately 120 weekly frequencies from Guatemala.

As part of its local growth strategy, Avianca increased service between Guatemala City and Flores, Petén, from two to three daily flights beginning in March 2026. The route is considered one of the country's most important links for domestic tourism.
Additionally, the airline noted that since January 2026, it has implemented its Business Class Américas experience on operations associated with Guatemala, targeting corporate travelers and frequent flyers.
Economic Impact Yet to Be Determined
Although both Avianca and Inguat believe the route could generate positive economic effects, neither organization has provided specific estimates regarding potential increases in tourism revenue or visitor arrivals.
According to Inguat, the actual impact will depend on factors such as flight occupancy rates, visitor spending patterns, length of stay, and whether the route becomes a permanent service.
The institution explained that every new air connection expands opportunities for international arrivals and supports the broader tourism value chain, although there is currently no precise estimate regarding the San Francisco route's direct economic contribution.
Similarly, Avianca maintains that expanding frequencies and seat availability supports economic activity not only through passenger movement but also through indirect effects on sectors such as hospitality, transportation, restaurants, and related services.
Guatemala Remains a Priority Market for Avianca

During the event, Avianca reiterated that Guatemala continues to occupy an important place within its regional expansion plans.
Mejía stated that the airline's presence in the country has grown steadily over the past three years and that Avianca maintains a long-term vision for strengthening its operations.
The seasonal approach used for routes such as San Francisco allows the company to evaluate market response before committing to permanent service.
"This new seasonal route between Guatemala and San Francisco will allow us to bring more travelers closer together and continue strengthening our offering in Guatemala by providing new connection opportunities for our customers," Mejía said.
With this new service, Guatemala gains direct access to one of the United States' most significant markets—a region characterized by high-spending tourists, technological investment, and a large Guatemalan community that maintains strong ties with the country.
