A Chip Odyssey Comes to Guatemala to Explore Lessons from Taiwan's Transformation

A Chip Odyssey will be screened in Guatemala in 20 days, bringing the story of how Taiwan transformed its economy and became a global semiconductor powerhouse to a local audience. The event, organized in collaboration with Outliers Gt, will also open a broader conversation about what Guatemala can learn from Taiwan's experience and how its own transformation could begin.

From Taiwan's transformation to Guatemala's future

The documentary tells the story of Taiwan's transformation over the past 50 years and its emergence as a global leader in semiconductors.

However, the screening is intended to go beyond Taiwan's experience. The event will use the documentary as a starting point to encourage reflection on Guatemala's own potential for transformation.

The central question behind the event is whether a country can fundamentally change within 50 years—and, more importantly, what lessons Guatemala could take from Taiwan's journey.

Rather than presenting Taiwan's experience as a formula to replicate, the event seeks to create a space for Guatemalans to question what could be possible for their own country.

A conversation about building impact in Guatemala

Following the screening, a conversation will bring together three Guatemalans who chose to return to the country after living abroad and have pursued different paths to building and generating impact in Guatemala.

The panel will feature Harris Whitbeck, director of INGUAT; Philip Wilson, founder of Ecofiltro; and Emilio Méndez, co-founder of Nueva Narrativa.

Their experiences represent different approaches to contributing to Guatemala and will form part of the discussion about how individuals can participate in the country's transformation.

The event is built around the idea that change does not have to begin “someday” or depend exclusively on others.

Instead, the organizers emphasize that transformation can begin with individuals, through what they do, the ideas they share, and the actions they take.

An invitation to question and participate

The event seeks to create more than a documentary screening. It aims to bring people together to listen, question, exchange ideas, and reflect on the type of change they want to see in Guatemala.

The organizers are inviting members of the community to participate in the conversation and consider how their own actions and ideas can contribute to the country's future.

Come to listen. Come to question. Come to share ideas. Come to be part of the change we want to see in our country,” the organizers stated.
