Plaza Telares Becomes Latin America’s First Shopping Center with Dual LEED Certification
Plaza Telares in Antigua Guatemala makes history as the first shopping center in Latin America to earn dual LEED certifications. Gold for design and Platinum for operations, setting a new benchmark in sustainable retail.

Plaza Telares, located in the heart of Antigua Guatemala, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone: it is now the first shopping center in Latin America to receive dual LEED certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The center was awarded LEED Gold in the Core and Shell category for its sustainable design and construction, and LEED Platinum in Operations and Maintenance—the highest level of recognition for ongoing building performance.
With over 50 shops, restaurants, and communal spaces, Plaza Telares is redefining what it means to be a modern retail destination. It’s not just a place to shop—it’s a living space designed to enhance well-being, reduce environmental impact, and foster meaningful connections.

What Dual LEED Certification Means
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world’s most widely used green building rating system. To earn both certifications, Plaza Telares had to meet rigorous standards in:
- Energy efficiency: Use of renewable energy and reduced emissions
- Water management: Rainwater harvesting and reuse systems
- Sustainable materials: Locally sourced and recycled construction inputs
- Indoor environmental quality: Natural ventilation, daylighting, and pollutant control
Scoring over 80 points on the LEED performance scale, Plaza Telares demonstrated excellence not only in its initial design but also in its day-to-day operations.
“Plaza Telares was envisioned as more than a shopping center. It’s a place for memorable experiences, brand engagement, and environmental stewardship,” said María José Grajeda, General Manager of Plaza Telares.
Antigua Guatemala: A New Hub for Green Innovation
This achievement places Antigua Guatemala on the map as a regional leader in sustainable commercial development. The city, known for its colonial charm and cultural heritage, now hosts a retail space that aligns with global environmental standards.

The benefits of LEED Platinum certification extend beyond architecture:
- Lower operational costs
- Healthier indoor environments for visitors and staff
- Enhanced brand reputation and market value
- Attraction of eco-conscious tenants and investors
A Model for the Future of Retail
Plaza Telares sets a precedent for how retail spaces in Latin America can evolve. By integrating sustainability into every phase, from construction to daily management, it proves that profitability and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
This dual certification is more than a badge, it’s a commitment to building a better future for communities, businesses, and the planet.
