New solar plant in Escuintla: Magdalena and MPC lead major energy project

In a decisive step toward energy transition, Grupo Magdalena and MPC Energy Solutions officially inaugurated the large scale photovoltaic plant Magdalena Solar I, located in La Democracia, Escuintla. With an installed capacity of 66 MWp, the facility will generate over 142,000 MWh of clean energy annually, enough to power 15,000 Guatemalan households.

This project not only strengthens the national electricity grid but also positions Guatemala as an attractive destination for responsible investment.

“Magdalena Solar I is a platform for sustainable development that enhances the competitiveness of national industry,” emphasized Ing. Jorge Leal, CEO of Magdalena.

Infrastructure with Environmental Vision

Built on land previously used for sugarcane cultivation, the plant was developed under strict environmental standards, without impacting forests or community water resources. It includes its own water well, environmental license, and all permits issued by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala.

This sustainable approach also reflects in Magdalena’s agroindustrial operations, which during the 2024–2025 harvest processed 6.3 million tons of sugarcane, produced over 629,000 metric tons of sugar, and achieved 173 effective harvest days, solidifying its leadership in the sector.

Inclusion, Employment, and Shared Value

During the construction of Magdalena Solar I, temporary jobs were created with priority given to local hiring. Over 80 women from Escuintla actively participated, representing 30% of the workforce.

As part of its shared value programs, high-impact social initiatives were implemented in neighboring communities, including:

  • Certified technical training in solar energy
  • School workshops on sustainability and recycling
  • Installation of solar streetlights in La Democracia and La Gomera

A Country-Focused Alliance

Magdalena Solar I is the result of a strategic alliance between Grupo Magdalena and MPC Energy Solutions, an international company specializing in renewable energy projects across Latin America. This collaboration demonstrates Guatemala’s ability to attract foreign investment committed to sustainability, innovation, and social development.
