Guatemala is set to experience significant growth in the spending of international visitors. According to the latest data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), expenditures by foreign tourists are projected to rise from €1.3 billion in 2019 to an estimated €2.25 billion by 2035, marking a 72% increase.
This growth highlights the expanding importance of international tourism in Guatemala, as the sector continues to outperform the country’s overall economic growth.
Rising Tourist Expenditures and Economic Impact
The WTTC forecasts a compound annual growth rate of 4.1% in international tourist spending between 2025 and 2035, exceeding Guatemala’s average economic growth of 3.5%.
- While domestic tourism accounted for 66% of total tourist spending in 2024,
- International visitors contributed 34%, a figure expected to grow faster in the coming years.
Since 2019, the tourism sector has grown steadily, reaching a total value of €6.25 billion, an 11% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, tourism generates approximately €1 billion in taxes annually, equivalent to 10% of the Guatemalan government’s revenue.

Employment and Social Benefits in Tourism
Tourism in Guatemala also plays a vital role in job creation. The sector currently employs over 541,000 Guatemalans, representing a 33% increase from 2019, and this figure is expected to reach 703,700 by 2035. Notably, nearly half of these positions (46.1%) are held by women, and one-quarter are occupied by young workers under 25, highlighting the inclusive nature of employment in the industry.
Strategic Focus on High-Value Tourism
Harris Whitbeck, Guatemala’s Minister of Tourism and Director General of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Inguat), emphasized the country’s strategy to enhance tourism:
“We are working to attract higher-value visitors, strengthen partnerships with airlines and tour operators, and ensure that the economic benefits of tourism reach all our communities.”
With these initiatives, Guatemala aims to solidify its position as a key destination in Central America, combining economic growth, job creation, and inclusive opportunities for local communities.
