IFX Networks bets on Guatemala to become Central America’s tech hub

IFX Networks is positioning Guatemala as a future technology hub in Central America through the development of a state-of-the-art data center designed to offer world-class conditions for enterprise data storage.

The company aims to attract global tech giants such as Google, Meta, and Instagram, while fostering new opportunities for employment, investment, and economic growth in the country.

A strategic investment to boost Guatemala’s digital infrastructure

According to Alexander Gutiérrez, Country Manager of IFX Networks in Guatemala, the project is rooted in the company’s confidence in the country’s potential.

We want to support growth and make Guatemala the technological hub of Central America,” he stated.

The U.S.-based company, headquartered in Florida with a strong presence in Colombia and Chile, is already providing cloud and data center services to local businesses. These services offer costs between 39% and 42% lower than other public cloud providers.

High availability and global standards

The data center is designed to deliver 99.989% uptime, supported by advanced infrastructure and operational standards certified by the Uptime Institute, ensuring continuous and reliable performance.

Companies will have the option to host their own equipment or migrate their data to IFX Networks’ cloud, where the company manages and safeguards information. The platform includes backup systems, data compression, firewalls, and redundancy solutions to ensure constant data availability and processing capacity.

The importance of latency and local infrastructure

Gutiérrez emphasized that response speed, or latency, is critical for businesses relying on real-time data access.

Latency must be short enough so that every request or data transfer can be processed immediately,” he explained.

This level of performance can only be achieved when data centers operate within the country under advanced standards, reducing delays and improving operational efficiency.

He also warned about the risks of poor data access: “Some companies could lose up to 30% of their operations without access to their data, while others would simply be unable to continue operating.

Flexible infrastructure and enhanced security

The facility includes high-capacity racks equipped with reliable power supply, air conditioning, and cooling systems to prevent equipment damage. This setup allows businesses to implement upgrades, such as new firewall protections, within the same day, something that becomes significantly more complex when infrastructure is located abroad.

Additionally, IFX Networks operates under a “federated data center” model, connecting its infrastructure with facilities in Santiago, Chile, and Bogotá, Colombia. This ensures that all data is backed up across multiple locations, strengthening security and resilience.

Job creation and talent development

While data centers typically generate limited employment, the construction phase of the project created around 350 direct jobs. As operations move into the next phase, expected in the coming weeks, the company estimates the creation of 35 to 40 specialized roles and between 60 and 70 indirect jobs.

Given the need for highly skilled professionals in areas such as cybersecurity, networking, connectivity, and electrical systems, IFX Networks has already launched training programs to develop local talent.

Educating the market and supporting SMEs

Alexander Gutiérrez

Gutiérrez noted that Guatemala’s market remains under-digitized but presents strong growth potential, as many companies still store servers in inadequate conditions.

One of the company’s main challenges is to help small and medium-sized businesses understand that cloud solutions are not a risk, but a tool to scale operations, improve efficiency, and protect critical data.

Beyond serving banks and large enterprises, IFX Networks is also targeting SMEs, emphasizing that proper data storage requires advanced technology and controlled environments, not improvised spaces that could compromise business continuity.

The information is the most valuable asset companies have. We saw an opportunity to offer the right solution for its management and to position the country as a regional tech hub,” Gutiérrez concluded.
