Guatemala has recently earned the prestigious title of International Luxury Destination 2025, highlighting the country’s unique combination of vibrant traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Despite not yet having ultra-luxury hotels, Guatemala’s authentic experiences and community-driven tourism have positioned it as a top choice for discerning travelers seeking exclusive, meaningful encounters.

Luxury Labs Highlights Guatemala’s Authenticity

The platform Luxury Labs emphasized Guatemala’s charm, stating: “Guatemala, a country of vibrant traditions, stunning landscapes, and cultural richness, showcases the essence of authentic luxury through its heritage and natural beauty.”

The organization added that the nation’s authenticity is its greatest treasure.

From handwoven textiles to volcanic landscapes, Guatemala offers experiences that connect travelers with something timeless: the soul of its people and the depth of its culture.”

Inguat Director Explains the Distinction

Harris Whitbeck, head of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (Inguat), explained that the recognition was granted based on the types of experiences offered rather than the presence of high-end hotels.

“We don’t yet have large-scale luxury hotels,” he acknowledged, clarifying that “the distinction came from the authenticity and exclusivity of the experiences our communities provide.”

He emphasized that not everyone can access these experiences, highlighting the importance of community-led tourism initiatives. Whitbeck also noted that fostering tourism led by local communities has been a priority since the beginning of his tenure.

Communities themselves are creating experiences that have already received international recognition. We are very proud of this achievement,” he added during a press conference with La Ronda.

Guatemala’s Growing International Recognition

Guatemala’s tourism sector has continued to receive international acclaim. Earlier this year, the country was awarded Best International Destination 2025 at the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, held on June 17 in Madrid, Spain.

Tourism Goals and Economic Impact

Regarding tourism targets, Whitbeck shared that Guatemala aimed for a 10% growth rate this year. By July, the country had achieved an 8% increase, welcoming 1.9 million non-resident visitors and generating an estimated $743 million in economic impact.

Whitbeck expressed confidence in the country’s trajectory, highlighting ongoing promotional efforts such as the “Guatemala Designs with Hands” exhibition in Paris, part of the Design Week, which has also been showcased in Madrid, Milan, and Berlin.
