The Digital Week between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean (EU-LAC) took place in Antigua Guatemala, positioning the country as a regional benchmark in digitalization. During the event, a non-reimbursable technical cooperation agreement worth 2 million euros was signed to strengthen electronic governance in Guatemala.

Digital Governance Enhancement in Guatemala Agreement

Edie Cux, Presidential Commissioner for Open and Electronic Government, explained that the agreement, signed by authorities from Guatemala, the European Union, and Estonia, will advance the digitalization of government procedures and services.

"This project aims to strengthen electronic governance and improve the efficiency of a digital state for the benefit of Guatemalans," stated Cux.

The project will span 42 months and focuses on three main components:

  • Digital Governance: Developing laws and policies to consolidate a strong digital state.
  • Interoperability: Integrating institutions for secure data exchange.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Estonian experts will train Guatemalan officials in international best practices.

Digital Week: A High-Level Bi-Regional Meeting

Organized by the European Union with support from the Presidential Commission for Open and Electronic Government (GAE), Digital Week brought together over 180 representatives from the public sector, private sector, academia, and international organizations.

During the event, high-level dialogues led to the creation of The Antigua Recommendations, a document outlining key conditions to attract investment in digital development across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event became the main bi-regional platform for digital cooperation, and the agreements and recommendations will be presented at the upcoming EU-CELAC Heads of State Summit in Colombia, further consolidating Guatemala’s leadership in the regional digital agenda.
