Fundación Mario López Estrada launches concrete flooring project in Guatemala

The Fundación Mario López Estrada has launched a project aimed at improving the living conditions of over two thousand families in Huehuetenango by installing concrete floors in their homes. This initiative is part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to health, nutrition, and sustainable development in Guatemala’s highland communities.

2,245 Homes to Benefit from Concrete Floors

The “Pisos de Concreto para sustituir Pisos de Tierra” program will construct 2,245 concrete floors, each measuring 30 square meters, in households across the municipalities of Chiantla and Aguacatán.

Hábitat para la Humanidad Guatemala will manage the project over a 16-month period, with a total investment of one million USD funded by the Fundación Mario López Estrada, the social arm of Grupo Onyx.

The project launch was attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala, Tobin Bradley, highlighting the international support for this social initiative.

A Holistic Effort Against Malnutrition

This program is part of the Foundation’s “Nutrition for Prosperity” initiative, launched in 2020, which focuses on reducing chronic malnutrition in children under five and pregnant women. The program is built around three key pillars:

  • Food availability
  • Health and nutrition
  • Sustainability

In addition to concrete floors, participating families have received training in health, animal care, and productive entrepreneurship, as well as livestock support including goats, chickens, and rabbits, family gardens, and energy-efficient stoves, along with guidance to build corrals and plant pastures for animal feed.

Innovation and Sustainability in the Highlands

A standout feature is the Foundation’s Centro Caprino in Huehuetenango, which raises high-quality dairy goats. Each year, the center distributes around 200,000 glasses of goat milk to rural schools, an orphanage, and a health center.

Additionally, goat offspring are donated to families in extreme poverty, fostering sustainable local enterprises.

Commitment to Local Development

The Fundación Mario López Estrada reaffirmed its dedication to supporting vulnerable families in the Guatemalan highlands.

"Our goal is not only to reduce chronic malnutrition but also to generate economic opportunities that promote self-sufficiency and local development," the Foundation stated.

Through this concrete flooring project, the Fundación Mario López Estrada continues to play a strategic role in building a healthier, more dignified future for families in Huehuetenango.
